Best grill pan, 09 December 2009
By A. D. Oltmann
This received top ratings from America's Test Kitchen (Cooking Illustrated & Cook's Kitchen). I was skeptical because I have tried about a dozen different grill pans in the 18 months, but none have really worked. This is the best I have used yet.
One was a square-ish pan and the corners snapped and became unusable. A common problem with many pans; they are welded and not stamped or folded. The welds usually break due to the high heat in the grill.
My old favorite is a bowl style; it's decent, but the problem is the top is bigger than the bottom so there is not a lot of actual grilling space. As a result you either have steamed veggies or you have to keep stirring.
The biggest complaint I have about most grill pans is the holes. Either they are too big and things like cherry tomatoes and sliced onions fall through, or the holes are too small. Small holes have many problems: difficult to clean, too many and the food gets too charred, too many holes and the metal separating the holes breaks...etc.
This pan is the best pan I have used yet. It it made of one piece with NO welds; the sides are bent up to create a lip and give the user an edge to flip and turn food. Also, the holes are not actually holes, they are slits. This means that one does not have to worry about food slipping through the spaces; from time to time sliced onions get stuck, but not really a BIG deal. It works great for Portabella mushrooms though it is not just for veggies, it's great for fish. Another big seller is that this is stainless and easy-ish to clean. It's not going to be non-stick easy to clean, you will have to scrub, but with a Brillo pad and elbow grease it's not a big deal.
The only complaint I have is the size. I have a two burner grill (unless I can talk my wife into getting a new grill next summer) and the pan can be a little too big for this type of grill. This "complaint" is not that big of a complaint since I usually don't do veggies at the same time as the meat.
If Weber updates this pan, I would recommend making it available in a smaller size and upgrading the metal; it's a little light weight. It's not bad, a little more heft would be nice.
If you have a grilling fanatic in your family (even if it's you) then buy this pan. It's great! You won't be disappointed. Get this pan.
Fits perfectly on my Weber Q200 and I love it!, 26 June 2012

When I was growing up in the Midwest the outdoor grill meant only one thing, MEAT! Fortunately people are becoming more sophisticated in what they choose to grill. Now it is not unusual to find fish, shrimp, mushrooms, asparagus, you name it, cooking right next to burgers and steaks.
The only problem is, of course, smaller foods can drop through the grill and onto the fire. I have purchased screens and disposable grill pans before and they worked just okay. When I saw this pan and how reasonable it was priced I had to get it.
I like the build of this pan, very heavy-duty without being too thick. The raised sides keep the food from falling off and makes the pan easy to carry. It takes a little effort to clean (I use a SOS pad) but that is to be expected.
I use a small Weber--the Q200-- and it is just big enough for cooking for 4-5 people. This grill pan fits perfectly on it but if I want to cook both meat and veggies at the same time I would need a bigger grill. I thought that I would make this little video to show the pan in action. Thank you!

Best grill pan ever. Raised edges keep everything in the pan. Small openings in the bottom of the pan makes certain that nothing falls through. Big handles make it easy to move around the grill. I've been grilling for 37 years and this is the best grill pan I have ever used.

This pan saved our grill! We have a low-end gas grill that was given to me and my husband as a Christmas gift. No matter what settings we tried it would either burn the food or leave it raw. With this pan, we can turn the heat up to where it should be and the food doesn't burn! The only downside is that it is a bear to clean. Other people have recommended Easy Oven Off but I haven't tried that yet.
Verify size before purchasing, description was incorrect, 13 May 2011

At the time I purchased this, the product description on Amazon incorrectly stated the dimensions as 14 x 11 inches in one place, and 17 x 11 x 1 inches in another. These are both wrong. When I received it, it stated clearly on the package that this grill pan is 13.5" x 18.5" x 1.5", which incidentally won't fit on my grill. I've submitted the correction to Amazon, but in the meantime buyer beware.

Before I gave this product a review I wanted to use it for a while. To set the stage I have two Weber Performer grills that I use at least 4 (and often 7) times a week for grilling and BBQing. I got my first Weber kettle over 30 years ago and still have it. Now for the pan. Mostly I use it for vegetables; squish, aspargus, string beans, etc. It works great. I have probably used this pan 30 times. It has started to warp but not enough to cause a problem. Cleaning is not to bad, SoS pad works fine. There are no coatings of any kind to harm. Their is one negative, the way the slots are punched through the pan makes the bottom of the pan a little sharp and really tears up the SoS pad. After a dozen or so cleanings with the SoS pad it seams to have sanded down most of the sharp edges. I believe this is something Weber needs to address in the manufacturing process. Also I expected to see that the pan was made in the states so I was surprised to see made in China on the package. I also have the other grill pan and it has the same pluses and minuses. I would recommend this product.

This was chosen by the equipment testers at "America's Test Kitchen"/"Cooks' Country" and I saw it reviewed and rated on one of their PBS shows. They rated it highest. It is a really efficient way to grill vegetables. I just clean zucchini, peppers, mushrooms, asparagus, etc., toss them in a very small amount of olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper and fresh herbs. I arrange them on the grill pan for my husband to cook after he's finished cooking the meat or fish. The result is delicious, cooked just to the preferred doneness and without heating or steaming up the kitchen. The small openings in the bottom of the grill let the vegetables brown and carmelize just the right amount but keep them all together and out of the fire. (A tip, carry the grill pan on top of a cookie sheet to transport it back and forth from the grill; this keeps anything from dripping on the way to and from the kitchen.)
With the free 2-day shipping option from Amazon this is an even better buy.

This is by far the best grill pan I have ever used. I bought one originally, and wished I had bought two. So.......I bought another. The two fit perfectly on my Weber Summit, perfect for grilling delicate meats along side grilled vegetables. A nice coat of Pam helps with any sticking issues. This is simply the best out there. The reviews about discoloration and the efforts they go to get them back to an original stainless finish crack me up. WHO CARES! Your not gonna hang this on a wall as art. This is a cooking utensil used at 300-500 degree heat! So, it gets a little carbon on it, which has no impact on its outstanding performance. The perforations are perfect and nothing falls through. The construction is flawless. You cant go wrong with this product if you're interested in its cooking performance. Buy one. Buy two. You won't regret it.

I really wanted to like this grill pan. It is ideal for grilling vegetables, fish and thin cuts of meat.
PROS:
1. Good size 13.5" x 18.5" with raised edge.
2. Sturdy stainless steel not prone to flex in heat. Made in Taiwan.
3. Cross pattern grill slits allow draining of fat, oil and juices in to grill and leaves aesthetically pleasing grill marks.
4. Lack of Teflon or other coating means this grill pan can handle high grill temps near 700F especially when there is a flare up. Otherwise you would be getting Teflon in your food and eating it.
CONS:
1. Needs a little bit of elbow grease to clean up which is fine, but this leads to item number 2 below.
2. The edges are sharp! What was Weber thinking? I am fine with this, but my wife and kids who help in prep and clean up would be prone to getting cut especially when scrapping off food and putting it in the dishwasher. Weber could have easily solved this by rolling the edges of the pan.

Highly recommended. Have used several times with vegetables, especially full length asparagus, as well as chicken strips or small kids burgers that might fall through. Very pleased. Note, it will get discolored with use. No big deal. At least when you clean it, you know it is clean. Previously had other brands where I was unable to determine whether flakes coming off were paint or charred pieces of food. Go with this one. Go with stainless steel.
