To Bag, or Not to Bag?

You may recall that in February we started running an experiment to pack pantry products directly into totes without bags. We got a lot of feedback, which was great. The responses shook out like this:

  • 68% liked fewer bags

  • 24% preferred having bags

  • 8% wanted something else, like canvas or compostable bags

As of this afternoon, we're giving you a choice: when you check out an order with Pre-Dawn Delivery or Doorstep Delivery (where you don't have to be home), you can choose to either have "light" or "standard" bagging for your pantry items. On the order preview page, the option is right below Delivery Instructions and it looks like this:

Rest assured that we are continuing to look at ways to reduce packaging, including options like canvas bags. Thank you for all of your feedback and thank you for your patience with our experiment.

Will be very happy to reduce my increasing collection of paper bags at home. Thanks!

The thing that I have a problem with, which may be a simple limitation of your picking procedure, is when I get 5 totes that contain about 1 1/2 totes worth of light-weight products. We had, I believe, 7 or 8 totes the other day, and it seemed to me like the produce could have been packed into 4 (one frozen, one refrigerated, two pantry). The inefficiency for us is that if we ask for no bags, it's hard to gather the stuff to bring in. If we ask for bags, we get 10 or 15 bags, but we only needed 2 or 3.

I appreciate the light bagging option - it's a great start. Produce and frozen products still are bagged heavily. I'd feel a whole lot better about ordering produce if each item was not individually bagged.

Feel free to send us a product request if we don't carry what you're looking for.
