Less totes per order

When we introduced the light bagging option, customers had the option to receive fewer paper bags. At that time, only pantry items were included. But now we are extending the "light" option to include chilled items, which will mean fewer plastic bags as well. To prevent cross-contamination, we will still pack all frozen items, meat, produce, cleaning products, and health and beauty items in thin plastic bags.

An added benefit of light bagging is that we are generally able to put more products in each tote, which means fewer totes per order. Yes, less totes to store!

You can choose light bagging option when you check out an order with Pre-Dawn Delivery or Doorstep Delivery (where you don't have to be home). You can choose to either have "light" or "standard" bagging for your pantry and chilled items. On the order preview page, the option is right below Delivery Instructions and it looks like this:

We continue to look at ways to reduce packaging. Thank you for all your feedback.

Tote Pickup Policy Change

Posted Friday, 7 August 2009 @ 3:43pm by Denise

Until recently we offered the option to pickup totes the next time we
were in your neighborhood. Our hope was that this would be an
environmentally friendly and economical way to get your totes
collected. Unfortunately we found that to keep up with requests we had
to send drivers out on separate trips just to collect totes. This
wasn't good for the environment and resulted in costs we would have
eventually had to pass on to you, our customer. For this reason, the
option to have your totes collected next time we are in your
neighborhood will no longer be available.

For more urgent tote pickups (formerly "as soon as possible"), if you
spend over $125 on that order, we will collect your totes within four
days rather than the previously promised next-day service. By doing
this, we will be able to make more delivery times available because
our trucks won't be making special trips just to pick up totes.

If you do not want or cannot have totes on at your house for up to four
days, we encourage you to use our attended delivery option. Attended
deliveries are made within 1-hour delivery windows and we bring your
groceries right to your kitchen-no totes are left behind.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our service for the
Puget Sound. And thank you for shopping with AmazonFresh.

Now Delivering to Belltown!

Posted Friday, 10 April 2009 @ 10:33am by East Coast Mike

AmazonFresh has started taking orders for delivery to the Belltown neighborhood, ZIP code 98121.

I happen to be a Belltown resident and I've been waiting patiently for this day. Now that it has come I am going to celebrate properly with a delicious steak and a Blue Moon (or two) that I've scheduled to have delivered this evening. Feel free to go with the bubbly if you're so inclined.

There are a few quirks to our Belltown offering that I'd like to point out:

  • We are starting off by taking attended orders only which means you'll have to be there when the delivery arrives

  • Our drivers will be making deliveries 7 days a week, but only between 2pm and 9pm

  • Delivery is free on any order over $75, but costs $5 between $30 and $74.99. If you get Big Radish status we'll waive the $5 charge.

We've launched the Belltown service in this way because it is filled with controlled access apartment buildings. We feel that an easier policy for everyone is to offer attended deliveries during a time frame when we think you'll be home. This way we can be certain that your order will make it to you.

If you've been waiting to place an order for Belltown delivery the time has finally come! I can't wait to get mine.

We don't know which area we will open next, but customer requests are one of the most important criteria in making that decision. So let us know if you are interested in getting service to your neighborhood.

To Bag, or Not to Bag?

You may recall that in February we started running an experiment to pack pantry products directly into totes without bags. We got a lot of feedback, which was great. The responses shook out like this:

  • 68% liked fewer bags

  • 24% preferred having bags

  • 8% wanted something else, like canvas or compostable bags

As of this afternoon, we're giving you a choice: when you check out an order with Pre-Dawn Delivery or Doorstep Delivery (where you don't have to be home), you can choose to either have "light" or "standard" bagging for your pantry items. On the order preview page, the option is right below Delivery Instructions and it looks like this:

Rest assured that we are continuing to look at ways to reduce packaging, including options like canvas bags. Thank you for all of your feedback and thank you for your patience with our experiment.
